Coffee Talk: Mispronounced Words

Okay so after some thought, I've decided to narrow down what I want to write about on a weekly basis.

I will no longer have the Video Pick Monday's; by now I'm sure you've noticed that my Typography Tuesday's are gone; I will keep my Feature Friday's, but I will also add on Trendy Tuesdays (link up) and Thursday Thoughts.

What is Thursday Thoughts? It's me expressing / venting my take on certain issues. It could be anything -- but I'm sure I will have enough material to keep this going.

So here is my first Thursday Thoughts post.

Mispronounced Words

Funny thing about mispronounced words: Until someone corrects you (often in a very embarrassing situation) or until you inadvertently learn otherwise, you can go an entire life obliviously mispronouncing words.

For my part, it wasn’t until my mid-20s before I realized that “awry” was pronounced: a-rye. I’d always pronounced it to rhyme with “bawdry.” I have no idea why — it’s just the way I read it.

So here is a list of frequently mispronounced words. The list is by no means exhaustive, but provides a good start.

And the one that, I believe, gets everyone, is the word OFTEN. I have always pronounced it OFEN (no 't'). Even though both are correct; research states that the word should be pronounced without the 'T'.

Do any of you have any words to add to this list? I'm sure you do. Can't wait to read what they are...

  10. Love it! I hate it when words are mispronounced. If you don't know how to pronounce it, then don't say it at all.
